Hello again, and welcome back to RIT! It's been a quick summer, but that doesn't mean the services team hasn't gotten a lot done.
The RIT Bikeshare is relaunching on Monday August 25. For fall semester, there is a totally new website in place, with much improved exploration functionality, an improved mobile experience, and an updated design. We hope that that you'll enjoy the new site. Please feel free to contact me any time at email@example.com if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about the service.
Our webmaster has recently started work on a new petitions website to allow students to raise important issues and receive official responses from members of SG and RIT administration. We're very excited about this project and look forward to sharing more soon.
The services team is currently in the process of moving towards a new model of software development. Under the new model, the source code for our websites and applications will be released to the community. This is really exciting because it means students can take advantage of our efforts in their own projects, classes can use our code as an example to learn from, and programmers can actively contribute to projects they're interested in. Its a great way that we can be engaged with the community and really maximize the value we get from investment in building our services.
SG Services has created and is currently previewing a new website service for clubs based on WordPress. The most exciting aspect of WordPress is its simplicity for making professional-looking websites, even if you have no design or programming experience. We're still exploring the service and collecting feedback. We'll alert the community when the service is available for broad use, but until then feel free to email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested.
SG Services is currently in the process of revitalizing RITPedia. We are extremely excited about the opportunity to rejuvenate a site that is such a useful repository for all information about RIT. As part of the changes we'll be making, we are in the process of upgrading to a new version of MediaWiki, which should result in a significant improvement in the user experience. We plan to open up site governance to a committee, but the details are still being worked out. If you want to learn more or just have a suggestion, always feel free to contact email@example.com
As we move into the new semester, I want to take this opportunity to remind you that you are always welcome to reach out to any member of SG or stop by the office. Our office is located in the campus center (same building as Ben & Jerry's) and we have free popcorn every day. You can also take advantage of our other services, like van rentals, a free lawyer, and conference room use. Every member of SG is eager to serve and looking forward to making your RIT experience great.
